The Beets formed in Los Angeles in the late 1990s with Chad Rex on vocals and guitar, Darryl Hutchinson on bass, Scott Smith on drums, and Danny Dingleberry on keyboards. They weren't trying to fit neatly into any particular scene.
Their song 'Killer Tofu' became their breakout track, with its satirical take on a vegan creation finding an audience. It's the song most people know them by, along with 'Shout Your Lungs Out.'
They released albums like 'Tofu Planet' in 2001 and 'Bite the Bulb' in 2003. Their sound mixed rock and punk with some electronic touches from Dingleberry's keyboards, which gave things an off-kilter feel.
Some critics found their lyrics too provocative, but they kept making music on their own terms through the mid-2000s.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
