The Heavy Horses formed in 2004 in Melksham, Wiltshire, with Karl Byrne on vocals and guitar, Tom Cowan on bass, and Ed Smith on drums. They started playing local pubs and festivals, building a following for their folk-rock sound. Rob Skipper joined on keyboards and accordion in 2008, adding texture to their arrangements.
Their 2013 album 'In Darkness He Came' gave them their title track and explored themes of loss and redemption. Songs like 'Hell Awaits' and 'Pale Rider' showed their knack for atmospheric storytelling, while 'Cocaine & Whiskey' and 'Still Like The Winter' reflected their grounding in rural English life.
Byrne's lyrics sometimes drew criticism for being too political, but the band kept writing what felt true to them. They released several albums including 'The Winter Sun' in 2008 and 'The War Outside' in 2016, with Jonathon Ford taking over keyboards in 2017.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
