The Time formed in Minneapolis in the late 1970s, with Prince initially leading the group. Morris Day handled lead vocals, and Jerome Benton was part of the early lineup. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who would later become well-known producers, were also founding members.
Their sound mixed funk and R&B with electronic elements. Songs like 'The Bird' and '777-9311' came from their early albums, including 1981's self-titled debut and 1982's 'What Time Is It?'. They released 'Ice Cream Castle' in 1984.
Their relationship with Prince grew strained over time, leading to creative differences and a temporary break. The band's explicit lyrics and stage shows drew some criticism at the time.
