The Weird Paul Rock Band formed in Pittsburgh around 2002 after Paul DeAngelo and some friends wrote a song about getting drunk at Chuck E. Cheese. That song became their calling card, and they built a local following with their raucous, party-friendly shows. The lineup settled as Paul on vocals and guitar, Johnny DiNardo on lead guitar, Mike Esposito on bass, and Jim Johnson on drums.
Their live performances were known for being messy and theatrical, often involving inflatable animals, confetti, and costumes. They released several albums starting with "I Got Drunk at Chuck E. Cheese" in 2005, followed by records like "Rock 'n' Roll Circus" and "Party Time, Excellent!" over the next decade. The band's lyrics tended toward the blunt and humorous, with songs about hating jobs or dealing with the IRS.
They never broke through to a mainstream audience, but they developed a cult following in the Pittsburgh area and among fans of underground rock. Their shows felt more like chaotic parties than traditional concerts, which suited their material about cheap beer and bad decisions. The band kept at it through the 2010s, putting out a best-of collection in 2016.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
