Timbuktu

Timbuktu was a Swedish hip-hop duo formed in 1991 by Jason Diakité and Martin Jäntti from the Stockholm suburb of Rinkeby. Their music drew from hip-hop, soul, and reggae, and spoke to listeners with its direct, introspective lyrics. In 1993, their song 'Alla Vill Till Himmelen Men Ingen Vill Dö' became a breakout single, its title capturing a familiar tension about mortality and aspiration.

They released several albums through the 1990s and 2000s, including 'Babylon' in 1995 and 'The Magic' in 2000. Other tracks like 'Åk Dit' and 'Babylonsjukan' continued their style of thoughtful, groove-based hip-hop. Their early work faced some resistance from parts of the Swedish music industry, which wasn't quite prepared for their blend of social commentary and accessible sound.

Timbuktu toured regularly and built a following both in Sweden and internationally. They kept recording into the late 2000s, with albums like 'The Fast Lane' in 2008. The duo's straightforward approach, mixing beats with plainspoken reflection on everyday life, stuck with listeners long after their songs first appeared.
