The Waifs formed in Perth in 1992 as a trio of sisters Vikki and Donna Simpson with their friend Josh Cunningham. Their first album came out in 1996, followed by "Up All Night." They toured with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen in those early years.
Donna Simpson left the band in 2001 to work on her own music. Vikki Simpson and Josh Cunningham kept writing together, and Vikki's divorce in 2007 shaped the material on their album "Sun, Dirt, Water." They've put out nine studio records over time, including "Year of the Dog," "Beautiful You," and "Ironbark."
Songs like "Brain Damage," "Billy Jones," and "Circles" show their lean toward folk with some Americana and Celtic touches in the mix. The writing tends to be personal, and the harmonies between the Simpsons and Cunningham were a recognizable part of their sound from the start.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
