Wallace Collection formed in London in 1981, led by Simon Fox. Their debut album 'Laughing Cavalier' came out in 1984, featuring the single 'Daydream' that reached the top of charts in several countries. The song's arrangement with strings gave it an atmospheric quality that stood out from typical pop of the time.
They released a second album called 'Bluebell Wood' in 1989, which got positive reviews but didn't match the commercial success of their first record. After that, some members left the group. Wallace Collection kept putting out music through the 1990s and 2000s, with songs like 'Get Back' and 'Merry-go-round' appearing in their catalog alongside 'Daydream'.
Their sound drew from jazz and classical elements, creating something that felt both elegant and accessible. While radio stations sometimes found their approach unconventional, the music found its audience through albums rather than constant chart presence.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
