Wigrid came out of Norway's black metal scene in the early 2000s. They released their first album, 'Arising from the Abyss,' in 2003, followed by 'Oath of the Lycanthrope' the next year. The band included Harkon Grimstad on vocals, Stian Johnsen on guitar, Bjørn Fløystad on drums, and Kristian Espedal on bass.
Their 2008 album 'Awake' gave the band its title track, which became one of their better-known songs. Other tracks like 'Der Schritt In Die Tiefe' and 'Erwachen' show their style, raw and melodic, with lyrics drawing from Norse mythology and pagan themes.
Some of their work sparked debate over its themes, with critics reading political messages into songs about ancient traditions. The band denied those interpretations, saying their focus was on heritage rather than ideology. They kept recording through the 2000s, putting out 'Sorg' in 2010.
