Zero Mostel was born Samuel Joel Mostel in 1915. He started out in burlesque and vaudeville before finding his way to Broadway. In 1964, he took on the role of Tevye in 'Fiddler on the Roof,' which was sometimes called 'Anatevka' in Yiddish productions. His performance of songs like 'If I Were A Rich Man' and 'Do You Love Me?' earned him a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical.
Mostel worked with other performers including Maria Karnilova as Golde and Beatrice Arthur as Yente in that production. He was also in the original Broadway cast recording of 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' in 1962. Mostel died in 1977.
