Cairokee formed in 2003 as a group of young musicians in Egypt's independent scene. The band includes Amir Eid on lead vocals and guitar, Tarek Abdel Aziz on bass, Sherif Hawary on drums, Shady Ahmed on guitar, and Sherif Mostafa on keyboards.
Their music often carries political and social commentary, which has sometimes drawn official attention. In 2006, authorities ended their concert in Alexandria after they performed the song "Ya Beit El Shaar." They've released six studio albums, including Ya Beit El Shaar in 2004, Assouf in 2007, and Layali El Bidr in 2021.
One of their most recognized songs is "Ya El Medan (feat. Aida el Ayouby)," which became associated with the 2011 Egyptian Revolution. Other tracks like "Wrong Way Blues / El Shekka Shmal Fi Shmal" and "Kol Haga Beta'ady (feat. Shahira Kamal)" show their range from blues-inflected rock to more melodic collaborations.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
