Mijn opa, die had dat soort dingen elke dag, joh. Vroeger ging ik daar
elke zondag naar toe. Na de kerk natuurlijk, he. Zeeland. En dan was het
elke zondag vaste prik. Twee glazen shandy en een glazen oog...
Ja, mijn opa had maar een oog. Hij was namelijk zo'n ouwe luchtvaartpionier.
Zo iemand die vroeger rondvloog in van die vliegende sigaren, en in van die
half weggeroeste kisten. Maar ja, toen werd het in het hele land oorlog, zelfs
in Zeeland, en toen hadden de Duitsers zijn fiets gejat. En toen heeft mijn opa
zo'n Messerschmidt teruggestolen. Hij is met dat toestel heel laag de Zeeuwse
kust langsgevlogen. Met van die rookletters achter zich van: 'Ik wil graag de
groeten doen aan ome Wim, tante Annie, Bram en Gerda en de kinderen, en
verder iedereen die ik vergeten ben..." Gewoon, geintje. Maar die Duitsers
hebben helemaal geen gevoel voor humor, dus die hebben hem tadadadada uit
de lucht gehaald, en toen is-ie als een soort brandende komeet neergestort.
Midden op het Zeeuwse strand. Vijfhonderd doden! Allemaal Duitsers! Toen al!
En mijn opa had helemaal niks. Maar ja, toen kreeg hij na de oorlog zo'n
militaire onderscheiding opgespeld, en toen hebben ze hem met die medaille
in zijn oog gestoken. Zielig he?
