Kero Kero Bonito formed in London in 2013 as a trio with Sarah Midori Perry on vocals and bass, Gus Lobban handling production and vocals, and Jamie Bulled on drums. Their early sound mixed J-pop and electropop with a playful, quirky energy that showed up on songs like 'Sick Beat' and 'Flamingo' from their debut EP 'Intro Bonito'.
They followed with albums like 'Bonito Generation' and 'Time 'n' Place,' which kept their melodic hooks but sometimes leaned into more personal territory. Tracks such as 'Outside' and '21/04/20' reflect that shift toward slightly more introspective writing while holding onto their bright production style.
The band has worked with artists like Clairo and Charli XCX, and they contributed 'It's Bugsnax!' to a video game soundtrack. Their music doesn't stick to one genre, moving between cheerful synth-pop and moments that feel more grounded, often within the same album.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
