A Whitley Bay band that turned irreverent humor into a UK hit with 'Nellie the Elephant.'
For their spirit, 'Dig That Groove Baby' says it all. For their unexpected reach, you still have to hear 'Nellie the Elephant.'
They took the Ramones' fast punk template and ran it through a distinctly English music-hall filter. 'Nellie the Elephant' was a genuine surprise hit in 1984, its catchy melody and Olga's yelping vocal cutting through on radio. Songs like 'Dig That Groove Baby' and 'The Lambrusco Kid' became live staples, proving their rough-and-tumble humor had staying power.
They formed in 1979 around vocalist and guitarist Olga, with Tommy Goober on bass and Digger on drums. After 'Nellie the Elephant' broke through in 1984, they kept releasing albums like 'Dig That Groove Baby' and 'Bare Faced Cheek' through the '80s. Their live shows stayed loud and chaotic even as the recordings got a bit more polished.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
