Уходил в леса воин молодой:
Разошлась зима снегом да пургой,
Голод мучил род, урожай пропал,
Удалых отцов Бог войны забрал.
Верный друг, топор, на тугом ремне,
Крепко сжат в руке острый "кол в броне".
Знает славный вой, род пора спасать,
Будет нелегко зверя заломать.
Дикий рев пронзает тишину -
Лютый зверь выходит на войну:
"Кто посмел в мои леса ходить?
Кто рискнул медведя разбудить?"
"Выходи на бой!" - воин закричал.
Великан медведь бешено рычал.
Человечья речь слышалась сквозь рев,
Воин молодой к бою был готов.
Острое копье бурого разит,
В теле молодом кровушка кипит:
"Помогай топор зверя одолеть!" -
Начал дикий зверь падать и хрипеть.
Как близка победа, но медведь хитер:
Лапой выбил из руки топор.
Изломилось древко на копье,
Парня придавил медведь к земле.
Воин молодой на снегу лежал,
Рядом с ним медведь раненый стоял.
И промолвил зверь голосом людским:
"Помогу я, брат, родичам твоим.
Храбрости такой век я не видал.
Знай, что с Богом ты славно воевал.
Торопись домой, в радости живи
И меня ты, брат, Велесом зови".
И пришел отважный вой домой,
А в родной деревне пир горой.
Говорят, мол, будто Велес был,
Горы угощений приносил.
