Caro Emerald is the stage name of Caroline Esmeralda van der Leeuw from Amsterdam. She studied classical piano at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, drawing inspiration from jazz singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday.
Her debut album 'Deleted Scenes from the Cutting Room Floor' came out in 2007 and went platinum in the Netherlands. The retro-inspired sound on that record and songs like 'Tangled Up' and 'A Night Like This' helped define her approach.
She followed with 'The Shocking Miss Emerald' in 2010 and 'Emerald Island' in 2013, which incorporated some folk and world music elements. In 2021, she released a remastered vinyl edition of her debut album.
