Chameleon Circuit formed in London in 1984 with John Robb on vocals and guitar, Dave Frey on bass, Tom Hingley on drums, and Dave Hackett on guitar. They took their name from a Doctor Who episode, which also inspired some of their songwriting. Their 1985 single "Teenage Rebel" reached the UK top 10 and became something of an anthem for that moment.
Their music had a punk and new wave feel, with songs like "The Doctor Is Dying" and "An Awful Lot Of Running" showing their interest in science fiction themes alongside more grounded teenage concerns. The lineup shifted over time, Hingley left in 1987 to help form The Beautiful South, and Frey departed around the same period. They continued with replacements including drummer Jon Brookes and guitarist Paul Mulreany.
