Da Yoopers

Da Yoopers started as a group of friends in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the early 1980s, playing music that reflected their shared 'Yooper' background. The term refers to people from that region, known for its distinct dialect and rural character. Their 1988 debut album 'The Rusty Chevrolet' gave them a national audience, with the title track becoming a hit about a beat-up pickup truck.

Their songs often draw from life in the Upper Peninsula, with titles like 'Deer Hunting Son Of a Gun,' 'Da Second Week Of Deer Camp,' and 'Smelting Usa.' Founding members Chuck LaChappelle, Dale Anderson, and Gary Mesnard have been consistent presences, with other musicians joining at different times. The band has released nine studio albums, including 'Second Hand Ore' in 1990 and 'Out of the Woods' in 2016.

In 2000, Da Yoopers faced a copyright lawsuit over the 'Rusty Chevrolet' melody, which was settled out of court. Their music blends country, folk, and rock elements, with a straightforward, humorous approach that connects with listeners familiar with the region's culture.
