Archive material and source history
Xerión formed in the Basque Country in 1999 with Jon Irazabal on vocals, Eneko Orobengoa and Mikel Ortiz de Latierro on guitars, Ander Perea on bass, and Iñigo Astiz on drums. They released their debut album 'Akelarre' in 2001, which shares its name with one of their songs. Their music draws from heavy metal with melodic touches, and their lyrics often reference Basque mythology and folklore.
They've put out six albums over two decades, including 'Basajaun' in 2004, 'Eguzkiaren Semeak' in 2007, 'Argi Beltza' in 2011, 'Zaindari' in 2015, and 'Azken Dantza' in 2020. Some of their song titles, like 'Na soidade do Aloia' and 'O Espírito da Fraga,' reflect this interest in regional themes.
The lineup has shifted at times. Eneko Orobengoa left in 2013 and was replaced by Iñigo Larrinaga on guitar. In 2015, Iñaki Purroy took over on bass from Ander Perea. Their lyrics have occasionally drawn criticism, but they've generally kept to their own path.
